Suitable for:Â General practice staff who have not previously undertaken the National minimum standards and core curriculum for immunisation training. Who will be administering vaccines.
Learning outcome:
Completion of the course will:
- ensure patient safety
- ensure high quality practice in immunisation
- ensure those who immunise are competent to do so
- ensure that HCSWs comply with PSD requirements National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers
- ensure HCSWs who immunise have adequate training, support, supervision and mentorship.

National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers
Programme:
- The aims of the current influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccine policy
- The immune response to influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines and how they work
- Vaccine preventable diseases – influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal disease
- The different types of vaccines, their composition and the indications and contraindications for influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines
- Current issues relating to influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines
- Communication with patients and parents about influenza, shingles and/or pneumococcal vaccines
- Legal issues including consent and use of Patient Specific Directions (PSDs)
- Storage and handling of vaccines
- Correct administration of vaccines
- Anaphylaxis, basic life support and adverse reactions
- Documentation, record keeping and reporting
- Strategies for the effective organisation of vaccination sessions
- The role of the HCSW as an immuniser (to include: role limitations, the role of others in immunisation)
- Support for the HCSW eg supervision, mentorship and reflectionRevision of the differential symptoms and complications of flu/shingles/pneumonia and Covid
